Spiral Step Learning
New for spring 2027:
Spiral Step Learning
Revisit. Retrieve. Retain.
Our Story
We are two experienced year 6 teachers and school leaders with over 25 years’ combined experience working in primary schools. Spiral Step Learning was born from the same challenges we encountered year after year:
How do we teach year 6 objectives to pupils who have not yet secured learning from previous years?
How do we ensure all pupils, regardless of background or ability, are engaged, progressing and achieving end-of-year expectations?
How do we implement the above without adding to an already demanding workload?
As senior leaders in some of England’s most disadvantaged communities, we were responsible for supporting pupils with special educational needs and those eligible for free school meals.
As writing moderators, we worked with other schools, as well as our own, to improve the quality of education.
We saw first-hand the impact of gaps in early learning — and the challenge teachers face when they are expected to move forward while also addressing what has been missed.
And so, Spiral Step Learning began.
Passionate about books, language and learning for all, we set out to recreate the spiral approach we had developed for literacy in our own classrooms: a framework that connects the curriculum and assessment as one.
We have lived and breathed this approach in our own classrooms and schools, seeing the difference that carefully connected, revisited learning can make on a pupil's progress, attendance and behaviour, and a teacher's confidence and wellbeing.
Knowing the importance of oracy, experiential learning and embedded assessment, we further developed Spiral Step Learning by combining Bruner's theories and our own experience with recommendations from the recent Curriculum and Assessment Review.
Being committed to accessibility and inclusivity, we have ensured all pupils have an equal opportunity to learn by carefully designing our materials so that everyone can fully engage with our curriculum.
We also consulted the new Education Inspection Framework used by Ofsted and designed our curriculum to fully align with the standards expected for a high-quality education.
So now, we want to share it with you.
